PIPER-HEIDSIECK BELONGS TO FAMILY GROUP RÉMY COINTREAU
Piper-Heidsieck played a significant role in the success of the venerable Heidsieck dynasty. At the same time, Piper-Heidsieck is by far the largest house among the three Heidsieck houses.
After the death of Florens-Louis Heidsieck, the founder of the original house Heidsieck & Co., his nephew Christian Heidsieck founded a champagne house in 1834 and traded products under the Heidsieck brand. Only one year later, however, he died completely unexpectedly.
Since the house was then managed by his widow, the name changed to the Champagne accordingly to Veuve Heidsieck.
In 1837 the widow Heidsieck married her brother-in-law Henri-Guillaume Piper (who was also a relative of Florens-Louis Heidsieck). Although the name of the house was then officially H. Piper & Co., the champagnes were simply labelled with the Heidsieck brand until 1845. Only after that the name Piper('s)-Heidsieck became generally accepted.
At that time a Mr. Jean-Claude Kunkelmann was able to achieve considerable commercial success in the USA as a representative for the champagne house Piper-Heidsieck. He returned to Reims as a rich man and invested a part of his fortune in the Champagne House. It should also be mentioned here that the Kunkelmann family had already been involved in the company in the early days of the Heidsieck dynasty.
