Épernay

Épernay ist eine französische Gemeinde im Departement Marne, in der neuen Region Grand Est. Die Gemeinde ist in zwei Kantone unterteilt. Épernay ist die Hauptstadt und hatte im Jahr 2016 23 084 Einwohner. Sie ist nach Reims und Châlons-en-Champagne die drittgrößte Stadt an der Marne. Es ist das Zentrum der Gemeindegemeinschaft Épernay Pays de Champagne.

Épernay is located in the western part of the Marne department, in Champagne-Ardenne. It is located 27 km south of Reims, 31 km west of Châlons-en-Champagne, 48 km east of Château-Thierry and about 140 km northeast of Paris1.

Located in the heart of a wine-growing region, most of its modern history and economy is linked to Champagne, whose production developed from the 18th century onwards and which is the main tourist attraction. There are also many listed buildings in the commune.

Its inhabitants are called the Sparnacians.
