Épernay

Épernay is a commune in the Marne department in France, in the new Grand Est region. The commune is divided into two cantons. Épernay is the capital and had in the year 2016 23 084 inhabitants. It is according to Rheims and Châlons-en-Champagne the third largest town on the Marne. It is the centre of the communal community of Épernay Pays de Champagne.

Épernay is located in the western part of the Marne department, in Champagne-Ardenne. It is located 27 km south of Reims, 31 km west of Châlons-en-Champagne, 48 km east of Château-Thierry and about 140 km northeast of Paris1.

Located in the heart of a wine-growing region, most of its modern history and economy is linked to Champagne, whose production developed from the 18th century onwards and which is the main tourist attraction. There are also many listed buildings in the commune.

Its inhabitants are called the Sparnacians.
