Cramant

Cramant (PLZ 51530) ist eine kleine Gemeinde, mit 901 Einwohnern (Stand 2016), in Frankreich, im nördlichen Teil der Champagne Region Côte des Blancs. Obwohl von der Größe betrachtet, lediglich ein Dorf, bestand Cramant bereits seit 1793 aus 390 Einwohnern. Cramant liegt rund 7 km südöstlich von Épernay, zwischen Cuis im Norden und Avize im Süden. Cramant trägt den Status der Champagne Klassifizierung, als Grand Cru Ort. Die Weinberge von Cramant legen sich auf südlicher Seite rund um die Erhebung Butte de Saran, in dessen Nähe sich das Château de Saran befindet. Das Château liegt allerdings auf der nordöstlichen Seite, die zur Gemeinde Chouilly gehört. Die Anbaufläche beträgt 345,4 Hektar (Stand 2019) und ist, bis auf 0,4 Hektar Pinot Meunier, komplett mit der Weißweinrebe Chardonnay kultiviert.

The most valuable vineyards are located on the south-eastern slopes of the Butte de Saran, on the border with Chouilly. It is a narrow strip that slopes steeply. The highest parcels belong to the neighbouring commune of Chouilly. To the south of the boundary, the slopes drop low down to a depression cultivated with vines, which provides a natural windbreak. This results in an ideal location for the vineyards. Only the lowest vines cannot maintain the exceptional level. Every year, Cramant, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger compete for the highest quality and noblest grapes of the Côte des Blancs. As outstanding as the Chardonnay from Oger and Avize is, however, it does not come close to the grapes from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant. The bouquet of varietal Chardonnay wines from these two communes is incomparable.
