Champagne

Sparkling wine produced in a clearly defined wine-growing area (in Champagne, north of Paris) with strictly regulated vineyards and with a clearly defined production process (production of carbon dioxide by fermentation in the bottle).
Around the two cities of Reims and Epernay, located in the north of France, there are about 30,000 hectares of vineyards on heavily chalky slopes. Only wines from these vineyards can be made into champagne.

(L.: campagnia - the plain, Fr.: champ - the field)
