The House of Mumm was founded in 1827 by the three German brothers Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp Mumm. They named it after their father, the banker and wine merchant Peter Arnold Mumm, who came from Solingen and had been making and selling wine in Cologne since 1761. Peter Arnold Mumm had made great profits from wine speculation with the so-called "comet vintage" (after Halley's comet) of Johannisberg Castle. After the death of Gottlieb Mumm in 1852, the company was split into the two companies G. H. Mumm & Co. (after Gottlieb Mumm's son Georg Hermann) and Jules Mumm & Co. (after Jacobus Mumm's son Julius Engelbert). Jules Mumm used the fame of the red ribbon of the Legion of Honor in his company as a recognition mark for the Mumm brand; the "Cordon Rouge" brand was born. In 1910, the company G. H. Mumm & Co. acquired the rights to the Jules Mumm brand. Tirage cellar of G. H. Mumm. After World War II, the champagne house and the sparkling wine house went their separate ways again. In 1970, the Canadian beverage company Seagram took over both companies. In 2001, Seagram sold the spirits division, including the G. H. Mumm to Pernod Ricard. The Mumm sparkling wine house with the Mumm, Jules Mumm and MM Extra brands was founded on January 16. 2002 was taken over by Rotkäppchen and the name Mumm was incorporated into the new company name Rotkäppchen-Mumm Sektkellereien.
